I agree with Beckwith that the “one size fits all” mentality doesn’t work and no one person or group has a monopoly on the truth. Life offers a variety of options but being pigeonholed isn’t one of them. People will find something to worship and a place to do it whether it be a sporting event, the latest celebrity, almighty dollar or another less than desirable place or object. Mediocrity need not be an acceptable way of doing things. As Beckwith wrote “Just as life holds back nothing from me, I hold back nothing from life.”
I liked what Beckwith wrote about being creatively maladjusted. He is right about it not being an outlaw or a total rebel against society. To me it means dropping the conformist mindset and to contribute something positive to the world no matter how small my effort is. We don’t have to wait to “get our act together”, we come just as we are. Like Gandhi said; “be the change you want to see in the world.” Don’t wait for others to change as you’ll probably be waiting a long time.
For years I’ve been skeptical of the prosperity gospel or any of the get rich in a hurry schemes. I find them messengers of false hope with no guaranteed results. Of course there is nothing wrong with being financially stable and materially comfortable so we’re not distracted by lack nor doing without.
One thing I never gave thought to until I read about in Spiritual Liberation was spiritual hydration. An example was when Jesus initiated a conversation with a Samaritan woman at a well. Not only did this break down a major barrier of that time, it showed that a person won’t be quenched by any trends of the day but by opening themselves to Spirit that satisfies our thirst.
I appreciate on what Beckwith warned us about the kind of conversation we get into, the books we read, movies we watch and people we associate with. There are other negative influences that can be added to this list so one has to be careful here as they can and will be pulled down into a rut that is hard to climb out of.
Instant enlightenment doesn’t just happen. It requires practice, time and effort to achieve. We don’t need to be spiritual junkies running from one seminar to the next or travel to exotic “power spots”. One can get enlightened at or near home. One must realize that there aren’t any excuses to not live a life of “joy, love, harmony and creativity” as Beckwith wrote. Out with self-imposed boundaries, in with dynamic power.
There are only three things to do in life. One is to be part of the solution not part of the problem. Second is to get busy living or get busy dying. Third is learn how to think as opposed to being told what to think.
